“Geeblo Logging Dispute Resolved After SAMFU Mediates Agreement with Tchien District Communities”

After weeks of negotiations, the Geeblo Logging Company and representatives from the affected communities in Tchien District and the community forestry development committee in Grand Gedeh County have come to a common ground during a mediation meeting held at the Kumah Town hall.

The conflict was centered on two key issues: delayed payments owed to the 19 affected communities and the lack of employment opportunities for local citizens.

During the meeting, which included SAMFU Volunteer, Hon. Gaye Gbadou (the district commissioner), chiefs, elders, youth representatives, traditional leaders, and women leaders, both sides presented their grievances.

The affected communities demanded timely compensation for the logging activities that had disrupted their lives, while the company leadership defended their position, citing financial constraints and operational challenges.

However, the company leadership agreed to address both issues as they commits to employing some of the citizens from the affected communities, providing much-needed job opportunities and as well pledged to release the outstanding payments through the community account managed by the Community Forest Development Committee (CFDC).

The elders facilitated the resolution on July 23, 2024 emphasizing the importance of cooperation and sustainable development.

The case was officially resolved, marking a turning point in the relationship between the Geeblo Logging Company and the citizens of Tchien District. Both parties vowed to uphold their commitments and maintain open communication moving forward.
